‘Police stopped me’

Openly gay tennis fan Chrissy Adams (pictured left) has alleged she was stopped by Victoria Police for carrying a rainbow flag at the Australian Open last week and claims she felt “intimidated”.

Adams said she was warned by two officers if fellow spectators in the arena took offence she would be removed from the ground.

The incident occured on Friday, January 20.

Campaign organisers of Rainbow Flags Over Margaret Court Arena have lodged a complaint with the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

Victoria Police Gay and Lesbian Advisory Unit manager Sergeant Scott Davis confirmed he had raised the issue with the officer in charge of policing at the Australian Open.

The complaint has also gone to Victoria Police’s Ethical Standards Assistant Commissioner.

It’s understood a check of police notebooks is being made to identify the two officers involved.

  1. The police turned a blind eye to the bashing and murder of gay men in the 80’s and have always had a homophobic element. They still do. Having said that though, it has gotten better but there are still alot of bad eggs within their ranks.

  2. Well good luck with police investigating police.
It goes on here in Queensland… Justice is not served in a true democracy, and there are very few good outcomes for victims of police harassment. Our Government is afraid of the police union going on strike if they can’t get the own way. Their latest threat to our peoples government is ‘not to collect speeding fines’.

That should be a warning to all those blind spotted gays who love the police marching in gay parades.Sends shivers down my spine, particularly as there has never been an apology for all the many lives ruined at their hands and the the unbridled enthusiasm they had for persecuting and intimidating gay ppl. that went on for decades.
Remember the Tasty nite club raids in 1996.
It was only 14 years ago.
    It’s nice 2 move on , BUT NEVER 4get.

  4. Perhaps more rainbow flags at the Open are needed! A flag concession outside?
And if you have to smuggle in a HUGE rainbo flag it would be worth the subterfuge just to unfurl it at the end of each match!
