Oxford St nightclubs The Gaff and Havana have submitted new requests for expansions and later trading hours after a series of licence extensions for gay venues were approved by the City of Sydney this month.
Havana, which is next to 24-hour gay venue Stonewall Hotel, is seeking to extend its 3am licence to 5am for a one-year trial period.
The venue’s new plan promises to prevent outside queuing patrons from interfering with members of the public, with four security staff at any given time.
The Gaff has resubmitted an application to double its entertainment floor-space to include an adjacent shop after its first application was knocked back earlier this year.
“Few in the broader community would expect that a nightclub would be considered an inappropriate activity within the business zone that makes up much of the Oxford St commercial strip,” its rebuttal document stated.
“Refusal of the application is unwarranted in this context and not in the broader public interest.”
The venue dropped its request for a 24-hour trading licence, instead only asking to retain its 6am condition.
Just last month two gay venues had their 24-hour trading licenses extended. The Colombian Hotel was given an indefinite extension on its licence with no new conditions.
The Stonewall Hotel was given a two-year extension on its 24-hour trading licence.
Both venues were inspected and found to be operating in accordance with existing conditions.

The strip might be considered a “business zone” but what’s missing here is the fact that patrons of these clubs are not usually locals, which means they park in the residential streets around Oxford Street.
If these applications are granted, I guess this means Darlinghurst and Surry Hills locals will be kept awake til dawn instead of three or four in the morning.
Great, just what residents and local police need!

Well I suppose you wouldn’t have moved into that part of Sydney if you were looking for peace and quiet Lisa.
It is in the city after all. Or would you like to see Sydney lose more of the energy it once had.
