Western Sydney will come alive on Sunday 21 September at the second annual Parramatta Pride Picnic.

After a highly successful inaugural picnic in 2007 the organisers are finalising details for a bigger and better picnic event for gays and lesbians – and their friends and family members – from across the suburbs.

“Last year’s event was attended by a lot of families either supporting their queer children, or what is often referred to as rainbow families,” Parramatta Queer Forum co-convenor Jonathan Llewellyn said.
“We are hoping that will happen again this year.”

The Parramatta Pride Picnic is organised by the Parramatta Queer Forum who are a group of service providers to the GLBTQ Community of Parramatta and western Sydney.

“After listening to the 300 people who came last year we decided to extend the hours of the picnic and include a few extras,” Llewellyn said. Activities on the day will include drumming, touch football, volleyball and stalls as well as face-painting, kite-making and storytelling for all the kids.

Special guests will include western Sydney drag legend and SSO online columnist Beverly Buttercup, while members of Team Sydney will provide a stack of things to do including a tug-of-war and sporting activities.

In addition, visitors will be able to access information about and talk to representatives of a string of western Sydney support and social groups.

A barbecue will also be available for people who don’t want to pack a picnic hamper, provided by the Western Suburbs Haven.

info: The picnic will run from 11am until 4pm in area 23 of Parramatta Park on Sunday 21 September and entry is free. If you are interested in helping out, phone 9806 5104 or 9869 1454, or email parramattaqueerforum@yahoo.com.
