Girls, it’s time to dust off the easel and break out the crayons in the name of art and sexual health, as part of an ACON competition.

Submissions are curr-ently being sought for ACON’s Arty Tarty Tea Party, an exhibition to be held during Mardi Gras and which will eventually lead to one budding artist’s work being used in a series of lesbian health resources.

“Same-sex attracted women and sexuality” is the show’s theme, ensuring nothing less than an out-and-out celebration of female sexuality, ACON’s Young Women’s Project Officer Michelle Wood told Sydney Star Observer.

“The men’s sexual health resources were always quite sexy and titillating and goodlooking, so we wanted to create a sexual health resource that would offer the same to us — be attractive and feature good imagery,” she said.

For emerging artists, the competition offers the chance to have their work exhibited at the Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville and for one talented individual it will lead to a commission to produce a series of works to be used in lesbian health resources.

“The person who knows best what a same-sex attracted woman wants to see and is going to respond to is a same-sex attracted woman,” Wood said.

“It was really important to us that the work come from a member of our community, in keeping with the Young Women’s Project’s ethos. We also thought this was a great opportunity to allow women from our community to develop their skills and showcase the work they can create.

Entries will be judged by a panel of erotica aficionados, which may include representatives from Slit magazine and Gurlesque as well as local artists.

The night isn’t only for the artistically able, Wood assured SSO. She encouraged anyone to head along to the opening of the Arty Tarty Tea Party on February 24.

“It’s going to be a really open celebration of sexuality in a safe space which I think is important given that there is a lot of shame around female sex in our society, particularly for same-sex attracted people. So to enter a sex-positive space and enter into a dialogue about that in a safe and welcoming environment will be great.”
