Sydney Bear takes Australasian title

He’s cute, he’s cuddly, he’s Mr Australasian Bear -” and for the first time he’s a Sydneysider.

Jason Lee -” the Harbour City Bear’s first official representative to take part in Mr Australasian Bear -” has come home a winner after wowing judges and audiences with his wit, humour and a furry strip tease.

The 40-year-old lawyer attributed his unexpected win to good stock (his mother was Miss Bellingen 1964) and a specially crafted costume.

For the Bear Minimum round, I borrowed a big bear head from an old HCB Mardi Gras costume and my partner made a little bear skirt for me out of fake fur, he told Sydney Star Observer from Melbourne.

I think a lot of people came in with just a jockstrap. But really, it surprised me, because I think I was one of the most vanilla contestants … but maybe that’s what the judges liked.

It was a cutesy performance that Lee backed up with some raunchy dance moves. Add to that a Socceroos-inspired strip tease -” complete with ball-handling skills -” and the judges were sold.

I’m not too sure what the title will mean now, Lee admitted, but I’ll be happy to help with anything the Bear clubs want me to do.

The part of the Bear community I like seems to have a high level of acceptance of shapes and sizes, and that’s important. I’m no glamour model, and it’s great someone like me can win the Bear competition at 40.

I’m sure that there would have been some Bear Nazis at the competition who would’ve looked at me and thought I wasn’t a full Bear because I didn’t have a full beard or something, but I think being a Bear is about being yourself -” it’s an attitude.

Lee will now take his attitude-free sense of self to the United States, where he hopes to compete in a major Bear meet in either Texas or Chicago to prove that, with or without hair, he’s all Bear.

Asquith, “People who look like that and who have a good job/money are never single”? Such a superficial comment.

    Oliver, you bloody hypocrite.
Only the other week you were waxing lyrical about how you thought Bears were fat, ugly and a poor representation of the gay community.
Seems you just like to read your own name on this site.
    Grow up or piss off.

Sorry, but you have to admit rich and successful people are always attractive to the majority.

P.S If you really said those things about bears, you ought to be ashamed of yourself, thats a very inhumane/horrible thing to say.
