Game on for marriage fight

Marriage equality advocates have again vowed to pressure the federal Government on same-sex marriage ahead of next year’s federal election, following a meeting yesterday with Attorney-General Robert McClelland.

Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Alex Greenwich said he was not satisfied the Attorney-General provided “clear reasons” why the Government continues to oppose same-sex marriage.

“McClelland effectively told us the Government is guided on this issue not by principle or by policy, but by politics… the only way forward is for us to make more noise and add more pressure,” Greenwich said.

“He basically said, we’re still not hearing it [public support].”

Greenwich said same-sex marriage advocates will target specific electorates ahead of the federal election.

“The supporters of equality have done everything they can to convince the Government to act, but it seems the only way to grab its attention is through the ballot box,” he said.

During discussions, Greenwich also urged the Government to act on two recommendations made in the recent Senate inquiry report into same-sex marriage: that Australia adopt a common state and territory approach to same-sex relationships; and that Australia allow access to official documents required by other countries so Australian nationals can marry same-sex partner overseas.

The recommendation does not include recognising overseas same-sex marriages in Australia.

“[McClelland] certainly did not rule them out and said he will consider them and will get back to us in the coming months,” Greenwich said.

  1. McClelland and Rudd are offering the Hitler defense. They believe they can be cruel to people because they have power that is not challenged.

We do not have super protection for private supper that the majority of us are in, and we have no Equal Opportunity Protection. Kevin Rudd is trying to get us excluded in a Bill of Rights. In short he lied to us in the last election, and got away with it.

If we tell 10 of friends not to vote Labor but Green then maybe we will be a threat. If we tell these 10 people of the Grave Robbing Kevin Rudd does to us, and how he has promoted Christian hate Groups such as the ACL that say women should stay at home and look after there man, then maybe we can appeal to our friends humanity. I think we have to point out to people how cruel Kevin Rudd is to us. Often people have no idea from the lies Kevin Rudd told. He talks of changing the laws for us or allowing us to choose where our supper goes. We have to point out that he is liar about what he has done.

If we vote Labor, we are supporting these lies, and allowing ourselves to be abused and used by Kevin Rudd. The way he stacked the Senate Committee on Marriage is a disgrace, the thousands of submissions for us he ignored. He allowed the ALC and other Christian hate groups to talk and denied us a voice that represented the submissions.

The reality is people like us die while Kevin Rudd is Prime Minister. They are bashed or killed or kill themselves. Discrimination is rife by the Federal Government. Often gay bashers are inspired by hate groups that Kevin Rudd promotes. He might not pull the trigger but he supplies the gun.

When my partner started working as a doctor, he was required to go to the country for three months. The hospital would only give us both accommodation if my partner could produce a Marriage Certificate. It was a Federal Award and the Hospital got away with it. Although this was while Tony Abbot was Health Minister he changed the award. Kevin Rudd still supports no change to the Federal Equal Opportunity Act so this could happen again in another Award. In short he supports discrimination on the basis of our sexuality. Labor needs to remove him form office before they get our vote.
