Call for royal approval
UK gay rights activist Peter Tatchell has called on Prince William and his bride-to-be Kate Middleton to support same-sex marriage.
Just under two weeks from the ‘royal wedding of the century’ Tatchell said he wished William and Kate happiness but said their blessing for same-sex couples to marry would “mean a lot.”
“The royal couple are lucky. They have the option to get married,” he said.
“Gay couples don’t have this option. They are barred by law from marriage.
“We urge Kate and William to support marriage equality.”
The UK currently allows same-sex couples to enter a civil partnership however moves are afoot to change the law to allow same-sex couples to marry.
“Gay marriage is a simple issue of respect, equality and fairness,” Tatchell said.
“In a democracy, we should all be equal under the law. This means an equal right to marry, regardless of sexual orientation.”
