First gay character

By on January 20, 2012

Kenya will see its first positive depiction of a homosexual as a major character on a TV show when the second season of young adult drama Shuga returns this year.

When the show resumes on February 14, viewers will be introduced to openly gay Rayban, who is described as “flamboyant and stylish … but keeps a low profile in public because of homophobia in Kenya”.

Rayban is the best friend of two of the show’s lead female characters.

The first season of Shuga was considered groundbreaking in lifting the lid on the sex lives of young Kenyans.

Brenty, not really, because South Africa is on the continent, yet gay marriage has been legal for quite some time, and the Anglican and leading church authorised support gay marriage and gay rights.
