Curtain call for Priscilla’s

Another gay bar on Commercial Rd has shut its doors, leaving just two gay venues on the famous strip.

The Star Observer understands Priscilla’s @ 153 bar has officially closed.

The closure was announced on the venue’s Facebook page and there has been no word on its future yet.

Last year, the Xchange closed but then re-opened as DnM Nightclub.

The Market also closed but has yet to open.

The two gay bars left on the renowned strip are Heaven’s Door and DnM.

Heaven’s Door owner Brian Frewin told the Star Observer it was sad to see the demise of another gay bar.

“It will be missed on Commercial Rd even though they were a competitor,” he said.

“Hopefully somebody will pick it up and get it back to where it was.”

Frewin said Heaven’s Door and DnM were “doing OK”.

“It’s not all doom and gloom and there’s so many gay and lesbian people living on this side of town… I think there’s just enough to keep it going,” he said.

He said ‘gay nights’ at mainstream bars and clubs were putting pressure on traditional gay venues.

“That does make it hard when we don’t get the support and they expect us to still be there,” he said.

“Priscilla’s is a good example of this. If you don’t support us, then we can’t afford to stay in business.”

The Star Observer
contacted Priscilla’s management but they did not respond in time for publication.

  1. What Brian Frewin neglects to say is that Heavens Door is up for sale as well, BPA Brokers have it listed for sale for $299k

  2. To say dnm is doing ok is an understatement in itself .. for the past month on a friday and saturday nught I have had to wait in a cue outside dnm for 10mins 15mins max.. then go to heavens door to see no cue there .. now thats saying something about a gay club that is apparently doing ok : seriously you might need to take a walk down to dnm on a friday , saturday night to see them jammed packed to capacity and then when dnm closes the people then head to heavens door or the peel :

  3. suburbangay: I think it’s time you checked out Heavens Door again…. we are again a great mix of gay guys and lesbian(who are not at all angry- the angry ones have moved on).

  4. Sign of the times. Another loss to our lifestyle and way of life. Is there no end to this.

I stopped supporting gay rights a long time ago as I saw the damage it is causing us and who we are. Yet this, is what you all wanted. So sad.

  5. Too right Gary. Commercial road has died. DnM whilst a great venue is chock full of angry lesbians. Heavens Door is also a lesbian dominated venue.
Places like Sircuit and Poof Doof are where its at these days.

  6. another great venue gone like xchange hotel was a great atmosphere with friendly people . sadly commercial road these days is being over run with judgemental twinks who think they are better than others and ego the size of a hollywood superstar.
