Carers need a break

Carers for HIV-positive people face a similar isolation and discrimination that is faced by those they support due to disclosure laws and HIV stigma. Living Positive Victoria, together with the Victorian AIDS Council, are running peer-based support sessions called In The Loop.

Organiser Guy Hussey said carers were an isolated group that needed support to help carry out their work supporting HIV-positive people.

“There is still, at all levels, systemic stigma and discrimination that operates,” he said.

Current disclosure laws ban people from revealing someone else’s HIV status, leaving carers bound to secrecy about their work. Partners, family members, close friends, neighbours or anyone with an important role in the life of someone living with HIV are invited to attend.
