Future of Gold Coast Gay Day uncertain

Plans by the Queensland government to build the athlete’s village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games have left the Gold Coast Gay Day without a venue for the annual festival.

The government’s plan to redevelop and transform the Parklands showgrounds in Southport to accommodate athletes for the upcoming games has left a number of events without a venue, most notably the Big Day Out festival, and the future of the Gay Day as it is known is uncertain.

Another set back for the festival that makes its future unclear is that the Queensland Assocation for Healthy Communities (QAHC), which usually contributes towards the event, can no longer financially support it due to the organisation being defunded last year.

“Due to Queensland Government funding cuts, Healthy Communities no longer has the capacity to auspice and contribute to the community event ‘Gold Cost Gay Day’ in 2013,” QAHC executive director Paul Martin told the Star Observer.

“Thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, stall holders, entertainers and most importantly attendees for your support over the past few years.”

Private company ‘Gold Coast Pride’ is planning an event/dance party for later this year with shares in profits going to community groups such as QAHC and several other charities.
