Separate but equal is a fraud: MP

There were many noteworthy displays of support for marriage equality during debate on the UK’s gay marriage bill on Tuesday, but one in particular stood out.

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy gave a passionate speech in the House of Commons on why he was in favour of the bill, which passed in a vote of 400-175, claiming that the concept of ‘separate but equal’ was a fraud.

“Separate but equal is the motif that determined that black and white could not possibly drink from the same water fountain, eat at the same table or use the same toilets,” he said.

“It is the same statement, the same ideas and the same delusion that we borrowed in this country to say that women could vote, but only if they were married and not until they were over 30.”

Lammy, who identifies as a Christian, cut ties with Christian charity CARE in February 2012 because of its opposition to gay marriage.
