Rangers and Bats take to the field

The Sydney Rangers FC, in association with The Flying Bats Women’s Football Club, hosted the biggest gay and lesbian sports event of the Mardi Gras calendar on Saturday, February 16.

More than 120 players and 17 teams battled it out for the men’s and women’s title in the annual MG Six-a-Side Tournament.

Not even the torrential morning rain could dampen the community and festive spirit, and the six fields being used at Bat and Ball Park (Moore Park) soon dried out.

The men’s competition was taken out by the combined NSW Police Force team, who won the tournament in their very first attempt. The women’s competition was taken out by the Batildas after a close fought final.

Afterwards, all players, friends and spectators partied long into the night at The Midnight Shift with tunes by DJ Dan Murphy.

Sydney Rangers FC is currently recruiting for two all-age men’s teams and, for the first time, an over-35’s team.

The gay-friendly soccer club based in Sydney has provided a safe and friendly space for gay men and their friends to play the sport they love for more than 15 years.

They’re Australia’s first and biggest gay men’s football club, with teams in 11 Aside Winter leagues, Summer Nights 7 Aside, Super Soccer Sixes, and a social game every Sunday afternoon.

They’re open to men of all backgrounds, races, ages, standards and sexual orientations.

The Flying Bats are a non-profit amateur football club who welcome all women to play.

Believed to be the largest lesbian soccer club in the world, you can still get a late standard membership with the team for the 2013 season.

They train Wednesdays at Tempe Reserve (Holbeach Avenue, Tempe) and usually play matches on Sundays.
