Gay Jewish principal settles

Joseph Gerassi, the first openly gay principal of an Australian Jewish school who was mysteriously sacked in 2011, has settled legal action just days before going to the Federal Court.

Gerassi was suing Melbourne’s Bialik College for millions of dollars for damages to his reputation, before he came to a confidential settlement with school authorities last week.

Fairfax Media reports that there was no suggestion Gerassi was sacked because he was gay.

In August 2011, Gerassi was told to resign at a school council meeting or have his employment terminated within an hour.

He was told 15 staff members would resign if he did not.

He was offered nine months pay but ordered not to return to the college or speak with media.

Gerassi will return to his home country South Africa for his new job in the country’s largest private education provider just weeks after he and his partner became Australian citizens.
