Directors on demand at MQFF

Ever watched a film and had a burning question for the director?

Well, Melbourne Queer Film festival audiences can put the hard word to some of this year’s filmmakers as they fly into Melbourne from interstate and overseas to field your questions.

American director Nathan Adloff, who made the queer feature film Nate and Margaret, will chat to patrons about his compelling film about a friendship between a gay teenager and a 52-year-old woman whose relationship strains from their differences.

American directors Daneen Akers and Stephen Eyer will also address audiences following their feature-length documentary, called Seventh Gay Adventists, which follows three Seventh-day Adventists who insist on sticking with their faith despite the backlash from their own community.

The directors behind both Australian features this year, Monster Pies and Submerge, will also attend the screenings and follow up their screenings with film-goers.

Sydney director Kelli Jean Drinkwater made the short documentary Aquaporko! in 2012, about a “fat girl synchronised swim team” who made their first public debut in Melbourne last year.

“The Aquaporko team and film are incredibly personal projects of mine and they are both things I’m incredibly involved in so it’s exciting to show this to a wider audience,” she said.

Drinkwater said she was nervous about the Melbourne premiere since most of the Melbourne team would be attending.

“I’m really excited to watch it with the team, I’m also excited a lot of the crew who I shot with in Melbourne will be there… to answer questions.”

Aquaporko! won Best Documentary at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival Audience Awards.

Drinkwater said people from other cities were now showing interest in starting their own chapter of Aquaporko in part due to the film but also their website.
