New Pope, same beliefs

pope 2013 420x470The Catholic Church shows no sign of altering its stance on marriage equality for the LGBT community, electing Jorge Bergoglio – now Pope Francis I – as pontiff. Bergoglio has a long history of opposing equality for gays and lesbians in Argentina.

He called marriage for gays and lesbians, “a lie aimed at confusing and fooling the children of God”, and also referred to marriage for gays and lesbians as, “a destructive pretension against the plan of God”.

He also argued that adoption by gay parents discriminated against children.

“[T]he Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family,” he wrote to the four monasteries in Argentina in 2010, according to the National Catholic Register.

“At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts.”
