Community set to grill politicians in LGBTI election forum

Mark DreyfusLGBTI advocacy groups have partnered to present an election forum later this month, where members of the community will be able to ask politicians from the major parties about their commitment to LGBTI rights in the lead up to the federal election.

The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL), Transgender Victoria and Organisation Intersex International Australia will present the forum, which will include questions submitted by community members.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has been confirmed as a representative for the Australian Labor Party, MP for Melbourne Adam Bandt will speak on behalf of the Australian Greens, and MP for Higgins Kelly O’Dwyer will represent the Coalition.

The forum will build on responses to the LGBTI election survey already submitted to the three parties, asking a wide range of questions on topics including anti-discrimination, intersex and trans issues, and LGBTI health.

The results of the survey will be released to the public before the forum, allowing attendees to question the politicians on their parties’ responses.

VGLRL Co-convener Anna Brown told the Star Observer the forum would help voters in the community understand the parties’ positions on a range of LGBTI issues.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to hear from the major political parties on important issues affecting our community to enable voters to make a fully informed choice on election day,” Brown said, encouraging people to submit a question.

The forum will take place on August 31 at DnM bar, at 119 Commercial Road, Prahran VIC. Arrive at 2.30pm for a 3pm start, until 4.30pm. Visit www.vglrl.org.au/lgbti2013 for details on how to submit a question, and check back over the next week for the results of the LGBTI election survey.
