A free feast at Fringe

The Sydney Fringe Festival will again be joined by the Festival of Free Spaces this year, a collection of unique free events in Sydney’s inner west this month.

Fringe fans can attend the Pop Up Festival on Friday, September 9 at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. Last year, 500 people followed a treasure hunt through Newtown’s back streets.

Local artists will set up the Artcore Guerrilla Artfair in an unexpected location in Newtown on September 20, accompanied by a jazz DJ and circus performers, to provide an affordable art market. The directions to this secret event will be posted on the day outside the Neighbourhood Centre.

The Reclaim The Lanes roving laneway party returns to Fringe on September 24, with multiple wheelie-bin sound systems, art installations and organised chaos. Meeting on the corner of Alice and South King streets at 2pm, the party will stop at two secret locations before ending in a community celebration in a Newtown public space.

“Free events rock. They have a different energy, spirit and purpose,” organiser Chris Lego said.

“These three events have become our own mini-festival — the fringe of the Fringe. These spaces are open to everyone.”
