Abbott ‘accepts’ lesbian sister

Abbott_60minsFederal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has told Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes program that his views on homosexuality have changed and that he’s accepting of his lesbian sister, Christine Forster.

Having originally told the program in March, 2010 that he “probably [felt] a bit threatened” by gay people, Abbott returned to the current affairs show and explained he was “unfazed” by his sister’s coming out.

“It came as a bit of a shock when someone who is close to you, who you’ve always thought of in a particular light, tells you that they’re now to be seen in a different light,” he said.

“Nevertheless I think I was probably reasonably unfazed by it.”

Forster said her brother had accepted her and her partner, Virginia Edwards.

Abbott remains opposed to marriage rights for same-sex couples.
