ACT marriage doubts

The uncertain result from the ACT election last weekend has thrown into doubt a pledge by Labor to introduce same-sex marriage into the territory.

It’s currently predicted that the Liberal Party will claim eight seats, Labor will also claim eight and the Greens one. It is not known if the Greens would form minority government with either of the major parties.

Speaking at a public forum for the LGBTI community in September, Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr committed the then government to enacting the marriage equality reforms.

The ACT government had previously supported marriage reform but said it would wait until the constitutional issues were resolved with Tasmania’s marriage bill.
