ACT rallies for marriage equality

Speakers from a number of pro-same-sex marriage organisations addressed the crowd assembled in central Canberra last Saturday, March 12 for a rally in support of marriage equality.

Rally organisers Equal Love report that 200 people were in attendance.

Speakers included representatives from the ACT Greens, the Community and Public Sector Union, activist collective Still Fierce, and Equal Love Victoria.

“The continued actions by Territorians is a tribute to their dedication to the cause, and is ultimately how we will win marriage equality and ACT democratic freedom,” Equal Love Canberra representative Damien Huffer said.

Huffer argued that the rally also demonstrated support in the ACT for greater legislative independence, condemning what he called “recent attacks on ACT legislative autonomy”.

Federal Parliament is currently debating a bill introduced by Greens senator Bob Brown to make it more difficult for the federal government to overturn legislation in the ACT.

Under current laws a single federal minister can overturn ACT legislation. If Brown’s bill is passed, however, an override of ACT legislation would require a majority vote in both houses of Parliament.

Upcoming events will continue the push for marriage equality, including a rally in Sydney this Saturday March 19 and one in Melbourne on March 26.
