QUEENSLAND Police have been accused of using excessive force and unprovoked brutality when dealing with a man outside an LGBTI-friendly Brisbane nightclub.

Beau Hall, 19, was allegedly heavily intoxicated when he was detained by a bouncer at The Beat in Fortitude Valley after urinating outside of the venue last Friday night. Police later turned up and escorted Hall to an adjacent alley for questioning where the alleged assault took place.

Video footage of the altercation shows what appears to be a punch to Hall from one of the three officers. Hall was then allegedly pinned to the wall by the officers as the footage continues to show another office apparently kicking the handcuffed man.

Police Union president Ian Leavers said the officers were “entirely professional” and reacted to subdue Hall after he “showed all the signs” of preparing to hit and spit on them.

After watching the footage the following day, Hall said he would like to see the three officers charged for assault.

The incident occurred during a nationwide Operation Unite police crackdown last weekend, a two-day police blitz on alcohol-fueled violence and anti-social behaviour that saw over 200 arrests and 400 charges laid.

  1. “Showing all the signs of preparing to hit and spit in them” – just the sort of lies you’d expect from a police union official.
Seems to me that Mr Hall hasn’t committed any offence other than urinating in public. It certainly doesn’t warrant him being taken into an alley to be assaulted. The officers should have questioned him on the main street, but no they can’t assault someone there. Another prime example of the bullying tactics used by police in Queensland.

I hope Mr Hall proceeds with a compensation case against these bullies.

  2. Another disgusting show of police abusing their position of power and trust in our society. No doubt nothing will happen, but things need to change.

  3. Just another appalling example of Queensland’s descent into fascism. Making the police complicit in demonising and brutalising innocent groups within society which can easily be painted as threatening society (bikies, drunken youth, sexual deviants – read ‘LGBT’). No mention of any action against liquor outlets which illegally serve alcohol to these patrons to the point of near-stupified drunkenness. Of course, they are portrayed as respectable pillars of the economy.
