Anti-anxiety campaign launched

anxiety2-thumb-400x220-110412Mental health advocacy organisation beyondblue has launched a new nationwide campaign to raise awareness of anxiety disorders.

The ‘Get To Know Anxiety’ campaign, featuring a short film starring Dark Knight Rises and Animal Kingdom star Ben Mendelsohn (pictured) that will be played in cinemas nationwide, highlights the symptoms of anxiety and encourages people to seek help if they recognise the symptoms in their own behaviour.

More than two million Australians experience anxiety disorder, most of whom are not aware that they have a treatable condition. Beyondblue statistics indicate that one in four Australians suffer from anxiety symptoms, more than suffer from depression.

Beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell said awareness of anxiety as a medical ailment is very low in the wider community.

“We hope this film and the resources and information we have to back it up will help us raise awareness of anxiety in the same way that we have raised awareness of depression in the last 12 years,” Carnell said.

The $2 million campaign is the first of its kind in Australia.
