Anti-gay doctor off the hook

A doctor who was one of 150 Australian medical professionals to petition against marriage equality last year because it would have “negative health consequences”, has been let off the hook by medical authorities.

The Australian Doctor website reported last week that Western Australia GP Dr Lachlan Dunjey was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Medical Board of Australia.

In April last year, the Star Observer revealed the group of doctors, led by Dr Dunjey, made a submission to the Senate inquiry into marriage equality, saying it would negatively impact on people’s general health and potentially increase HIV rates.

It said marriage equality would “normalise” homosexual behaviour and pointed to the higher rates of HIV and syphillis among men who have sex with men compared with heterosexuals.

It led to former Victorian Equal Opportunity Commission board member Dr Kuruvilla George resigning after he had supported the submission.
