Applications open for Team Sydney festival

Applications are now open for sporting clubs interested in participating in Team Sydney’s Sports Festival 2011, to be held as part of next year’s New Mardi Gras celebrations.

The 2010 Sports Festival was a resounding success, with 17 sporting events attracting a wide range of participants.

“It was a real diverse range of events too,” Team Sydney president Geoffrey Radford told Sydney Star Observer.

“There are 32 teams registered with Team Sydney, and they cover a pretty diverse field of sports, so we’re expecting another good program for the 2011 festival.”

The 2010 festival included established sporting events, like tennis, water polo and bowling, and more offbeat inclusions like tug-of-war and the annual Little Black Dress fun run, in which serious runners and novices alike frock up in their finery for a run around Centennial Park.

Team Sydney needs interested sports clubs to get their applications in by September 17 — but the earlier the better, as preliminary details will assist them with possible sponsorship and funding deals for the festival.

Subject to sponsorship, Team Sydney even hopes to be able to fully fund each event’s $75 Mardi Gras registration/application fee. (Note: please do not send money with your initial application. If money is required, they’ll advise after the application has been received.)

Teams should include details of the date, venue, costing and nature of their sporting event(s) in their application. Support material, including images, video and examples of previous successful events, is also encouraged.

Team Sydney asks prospective event-holders to consider the major dates in next year’s Mardi Gras calendar — including Fair Day on February 20 and the Parade on March 5 — when choosing a date for their event.
