Eight metres tall and sporting two arms 15 metres long, the indigenous creation spirit Biame dominated the Welcome segment of the opening ceremony. Designer Idis Stewart said the spirit is seen in different forms by different skin groups around Australia, but that he based the design on traditional images. Construction took a month and used some of the same techniques as Aboriginal basket weaving. The final result? He looked amazing, Stewart said. I was completely overcome.
