“The biological father of the child is known to us, and will be known to the child. We have agreed with him that his name will not be released to the media. We have chosen to make this statement about Sophie’s pregnancy as we understand there may be public interest due to my position.

“This is, however, a very private matter and we ask for our privacy to be respected during this time.

“I do not propose to make any further statements following today.”

  1. I’m stoked for Penny & Sophie, I’m sure they will make great parents & so happy that they have this opportunity.

What I don’t understand is having a lesbian in Politics & still having a Government that doesn’t allow same-sex marriage. What does Penny have to say on that subject?

Come into the 21st Century Australia – it’ll be about time.

  2. Congratulations Penny and Sophie! Best of luck in all that parenthood brings.

    @ otto:

Are you serious? Is a heterosexual woman who adopts a baby also not a “mum”? Should we go out and tell all those people who love, care for and raise children who aren’t genetically related to them that they aren’t good enough? You seem concerned with gay marriage, but you just implied that at least 50% of all same-sex parents aren’t real mums and dads.

You’re a tool otto. It’s people like you who are holding this country back.

Motherhood is a state of raising and nurturing a child. I think Penny and Sophie will be great mothers.

  3. I don’t see how your girlfriend having a baby makes you a “mum”.
It might result in Penny Wong becoming a parent and being called “mum” because that is what they teach the child to call her, but unless it was Wong’s egg that was used, she is not going “to be a mum” as the title of this article proclaims. She is going to be a parent.

Perhaps this will inspire her to do more towards getting Gay Marriage. Unless, of course, she is happy living without the benefit of marriage like Gillard.

Ed: Being a mum doesn’t require a biological link – just ask all those in melded families these days.

  4. Congratulations! I wish them both very well on their journey to parenthood. I just hope the first lesson for the child is not how the Prime Minister discriminates!
