The Australian Sex Party has called for an end to charging women GST on sanitary products.

Victorian Sex Party Senate hopeful Katie Blakey said this week Australian women are forced to pay an extra dollar on average each month for pads or tampons because of the GST.

Blakey said the GST — placed on sanitary products as ‘luxury’ items — raised over $14 million annually. She called on the major parties to abolish the tax or send the money to ovarian cancer researchers.

“Why should products connected to a biological function like this be taxed,” Blakey said.

“Blood, cramps, PMT, strings, plastic wrappers — there’s nothing luxurious about the whole thing.

“With a menstrual cycle every month, 12 times a year for 30 or 40 years, this tax is something women are constantly reminded of.”

Blakey said the Australian Sex Party considers the tax to be a form of sex discrimination.
