Cory Bernardi does not believe that same-sex marriage policy was behind lost votes for the Liberal party in Saturday’s federal election.

The Liberal Senator for South Australia appeared on ABC’s 7.30 program, where he was quizzed about where moderates would go if the Liberal Party became more conservative.

Same-sex marriage and voluntary euthanasia were discussed as contentious issues.

“I would suggest to you that the million votes that we’ve lost that went to One Nation, that went to the Christian Democrats and others, weren’t lost because our policy on same-sex marriage or euthanasia was wrong,” Bernardi said.

“The position for the Liberal Party on any life and death matter is one of entire conscience.

“The position for the Liberal Party on same-sex marriage and redefining marriage is one of allowing the Australian people to decide – a circumstance and a position that is supported by the polls by the overwhelming majority of Australians.”

This comes days after Cory Bernardi told The Guardian that he felt there was no need to rush a plebiscite, urging that a Coalition government should be given time to assess their policies.

“The election result would give everybody cause to take a deep breath and determine what our real priorities are,” Bernardi said.

  2. I’d suggest it’s their stance on marriege equality, COMBINED with the fact that he’s a dinosaur, unwilling to change his mind on ANYTHING, that did it.

  3. Cory Bernardi with lots of help from his fellow arch-conservative, ultra-right-wing mate Andrew Bolt, are largely responsible for the crash of the once-great Liberal Party of Australia. I am old enough to have learnt what the Liberal Party as envisaged by Bob Menzies when he founded it was like. It was very much a Middle-of-the Road Political movement. It must have had something going for it under his control because they remained in office for over 20 years – admittedly because Australians have always rejected Extremism in all it’s forms and during that time the ALP was so far to the Left it was little more than the Communist Party under a different name.
The Liberal party of today has, with a few exceptions like Malcolm Turnbull, Christopher Pine, has become dominated by a bunch of neo-fascists, ultra-right-wing Extremists – and I include Bernardi and Tony Abbott and his little darling Peta Credlin amongst them. They want to take over the Liberal party and turn it into some sort of despotic, religion-controlled organisation. Abbott’s Marriage Equality Plebiscite was nothing more than a con-job. If Turnbull had cancelled it the cries from the ALP & others of “Broken Promises! Broken Promises” would be endless.
Bernardi has always been against Same Gender Marriage. he has always been an enemy of Malcolm Turnbull. For him to portray himself as some sort of exemplary Liberal is a charade. he, along with so many others, has betrayed the very essence of Liberalism.
