Bernardi doubles down on polygamy comments

Controversial Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has reiterated his conviction that legalising same-sex marriage would lead to calls for legalised polygamy and bestiality.

Cory-Bernardi_2344115bSpeaking to Fairfax Media earlier today, Bernardi pointed to the emergence of a polyamory lobby group as evidence his warnings on the corrosive social effects of same-sex marriage were accurate.

“There is actually now a petition being put together for the House of Representatives by Green activists to legally recognise multi-member unions. Now, I said that would happen. It’s happening. I think there should be alarm – if you’re going to redefine a word to satisfy the demands of a minority then you’re going to face continuing demands in that space,” Bernardi said.

Bernardi was referring to the Polyamory Action Lobby (PAL), a small lobby group started in January by Young Greens members at the University of Sydney.

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young condemned Bernardi’s comments, saying they “demeaned” Australians with loved ones in gay relationships.

“Linking the love that thousands of Australian couples share to bestiality is disgraceful. The last time he espoused this type of ignorant hate speech Cory Bernardi was forced to resign as Tony Abbott’s Parliamentary Secretary. It seems he hasn’t learnt anything since the last time he was condemned by his own colleagues,” Hanson-Young said.

Bernardi was forced to resign as Parliamentary Secretary to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott after making the comments during a Senate debate in September.

PAL President Brigitte Garozzo said Bernardi’s comments “don’t make sense”.

“Equating same-sex marriage and bestiality is dehumanising for the humans involved, because it equates same-sex marriage or queer relationships as the same as that between animals, or between animals and humans,” Garozzo said.

She added that the proposed petition would not be ready for Parliament within “the next few months” as the PAL executive are currently busy with exams.
