Brisbane poll backs equality

A third Liberal MP has reported significant support for marriage equality in her electorate.

Brisbane Liberal MP Teresa Gambaro has reported on her website that 73 percent of 1532 people who responded to her survey of constituents supported same-sex marriage.

Gambaro surveyed residents both through an online survey and through her electoral newsletter.

Support for civil unions was not wide, with only 112 out of the 412 respondents who were opposed to changes to the marriage act feeling they could support civil unions.

“During the course of this debate I have heard from, and met with a number of individuals, organisations and representatives from both sides of this discussion,” Gambaro wrote in a statement.

“I have appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and listen to your views.”

Australian Marriage Equality national Convener, Alex Greenwich said the result was pleasing.

“The strong support for same-sex marriage in these key Liberal Party seats proves that equality is an issue that voters across the political spectrum feel strongly about”.

He was also heartened by the low support for civil unions.

“This result also shows that Australians understand that separate is not equal, and they see that creating a 2nd class scheme will only further entrench discrimination,” Greenwich said.

Gambaro is the third Liberal MP to announce overwhelming electorate support for marriage equality, with Malcolm Turnbull reporting that 75 percent of voters in his electorate support reform, and Joe Hockey reporting that 78 percent of young voters in his electorate support marriage equality.
