Bush’s daughter yes to gay marriage

The daughter of former US President George W Bush supports gay marriage.

The New York Times has reported Barbara Bush, one of George W Bush’s twin daughters, has taped a video calling on New York state to legalise same-sex marriage.

Barbara’s view on the issue places her at odds with her father who during his time as president was opposed to same-sex marriage.

In the video she said everyone should have the right to marry the person they love.

“I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality,” she said in the video.

“New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”

Last year on US television, her mother Laura Bush said she believed gay marriage would eventually be allowed in the US.

“I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman, but I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other that they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has,” she told CNN.

Meghan McCain, daughter of 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain, has stated her support for same-sex marriage publicly, despite her father’s opposition.

Out lesbian Mary Cheney, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney has also spoken out in support of gay marriage, a position her father later echoed.
