Business destroyed in hate attack

NEW ZEALAND: A lesbian couple have been burnt out of their business a week after their adjacent home and vehicles were tagged with anti-gay slurs.

Mangawhai Heads residents Lindsay Curnow and Juliet Leigh’s mail order plant bulb business was torched in what police have deemed a suspicious fire, destroying paperwork, personal belongings and business supplies — meaning the couple have lost their income until the next planting season.

However, they told New Zealand’s One News these were the first incidents of homophobia they had experienced in the town, and they have no plans to leave, with locals rallying around the couple.

“People are just horrified,” Leigh said. “We walk down the street and people just come over and shake hands and say how sorry they are.

“People we don’t think we even know are hugging us.”
