Busy times ahead

October is a busy time in the Illawarra, with lots to check out.

Coming up first are the Spectrum Festival, a community fundraiser for next year’s Illawarra Mardi Gras float and the UNITY Car-B-Que. See below for details:

Saturday 24 October at The Phoenix Theatre, 24 Bridge St, Coniston.
QWERTY (Queer Tea), from noon – 4pm
Join everyone for Devonshire tea and a sausage sizzle. Connect with community, local LGBT groups and service providers. Find out about the plans for this year’s float and be among the first to sign up. Reduce registration fees the earlier you register, so bring your friends and get involved.

Queer Short Film Festival and Community Raffle, from 8pm – 10pm
A selection of some of the best queer films from Queer Screen. Donations at the door are appreciated. Sunday 25 October at Stuart Park, Wollongong.

Queers in the Park: A Family ‘Outing’, from 11am – 2pm
Catch up with new and old friends, relax and recharge with a picnic at Stuart Park (near the lagoon). BYO everything. Look for the rainbow flags.

Come and support your local community and the official launch of the rebirth of an Illawarra Mardi Gras Float.
For enquiries or to offer assistance on the day call 4226 1163 (Mon–Fri).

UNITY Car-B-Que, from 2pm – 5pm

Also starting from Stuart Park on October 25, the annual Car-B-Que trophy is up for grabs. Get a team car together ASAP and join a battle of wits against other teams. Find clues and answer questions to get to the mystery final destination.

Don’t forget to put November 7 in your diaries. It will be a big day, with Wollongong’s Viva La Gong festivities in McCabe Park during the day (where I will be taking part in a Youth Living Library) and a Mad Hatter’s themed UNITY Dance in the evening.
