Call for meningitis vaccination before NYC pride

New York New York City health officials have urged gay men to get vaccinated against meningitis in the lead up to the city’s gay pride events later this month.

An outbreak of the disease mainly affecting New York City’s gay community has killed seven people since it began in 2010, and of 22 people infected 12 tested positive for HIV, making them more susceptible to infection.

Although meningitis does not only affect the gay community, new research published this week suggests men who have sex with men in New York are 50 times more likely to contract the disease than the city’s general population.
