Case Against 8 to have limited release from tomorrow

AFTER premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival before taking on the film festival circuit around globally and Australia-wide, The Case Against 8 will open in Sydney and Melbourne tomorrow for a limited commercial release.

The documentary, which was filmed over five years, follows the battle for marriage equality from the eyes of two families who file a lawsuit against California’s infamous Proposition 8.

Their battle, led by super-star legal team, conservative Ted Olsen and liberal David Boies — who previously opponents in the president-making Bush vs Gore political saga — goes all the way to the US Supreme Court.

The now-famous landmark decision that follows has had incredible impact, and a domino effect, on the marriage equality movement in the US.

“Over the past five years, we spent countless emotional days and sleepless nights with the attorneys and plaintiffs, capturing over 600 hours of footage,” filmmakers Ryan White and Ben Cotner said in a statement.

“On June 28, 2013, we accompanied Kris and Sandy and Paul and Jeff to their respective City Halls where they were legally married, with their families and the entire world watching.

“We are extremely grateful for the incredible access we’ve been given since the very beginning of this case, which allowed us to explore issues of bipartisanship, civil rights, privacy, and human dignity.”

The Case Against 8 has been met with wide critical acclaim, and was the winner of the US documentary directing award at Sundance and the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW festival.
