Catholic ban on student groups
A Canadian Catholic school board in Ontario has provoked outrage by banning students from forming gay-straight alliance groups.
On November 2 the Halton Catholic School Board voted to ban gay-straight alliance groups.
Chair of the board, Alice Anne LeMay enflamed things further when she equated gay-straight alliances with white supremicist groups in an interview with Canada’s largest gay newspaper.
“We don’t have Nazi groups either,” LeMay told Xtra!, “Gay-straight alliances are banned because they are not within the teachings of the Catholic Church.”
In comparison, Ontario’s state school system actively encourage students to form gay-straight alliances.
Following the media storm, the board has announced it is reconsidering its decision.
