Gotye disses Glee cover

By on April 24, 2012

There’s been a fair few music acts not willing to have their tunes covered by TV musical Glee, but it seems one who has was not so impressed with the treatment.

Australia’s Gotye, whose US #1 hit Somebody That I Used to Know appeared on Glee in the US a few weeks ago, let his feelings known to the Sunday Mail.

The song was sung by star Darren Criss – who plays gay character Blaine -  and openly gay guest performer Matt Bomer in the episode.

“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box,” Gotye said.

Ouch!

The song shot up the Billboard charts after Glee featured it.

Check out the performance below and let us know if you think the criticism is warranted.

Gotye pretty much sums up Glee perfectly.

Goyte should be thankful Glee did that song, and all the extra sales.I had never heard of him and bought the track after watching the show.

Yeah, pretty void of the heart and pain of the original.

Sounds pathetic when compared to the original.

Blech. That show auto-tunes everything to death and this is no different. Not only does it sound like it’s played from a cardboard box, the box is underwater and the CD is skipping.

It’s shameful considering that in the pilot episode you actually heard their real voices and these 30yo “kids” can actually sing.

I’m with Gotye and Ben on this one…

What the hell? Glee ruins every song (the ones that are good, few of them), what would he expect? They ruined 2 songs in one when they sang Michael Jackson’s Thriller + Heads will roll by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs….
Gotye simply shouldn’t had turned to the mainstream area…

I think Glee can have heart. I do agree though, Gotye shows so much emotion and voice in it and Darren doesn’t pull through. I do think Darren is a good singer though.
