America’s best-selling singles and albums of 2010

Billboard Magazine has announced America’s best-selling singles and albums for 2010.

Taking top honours in the singles category is Katy Perry, who sold a whopping 4.40 million copies of California Gurls (bottom of post).

Close behind were 90s rock band Train with their inescapable hit Hey, Soul Sister and the UK’s highest selling single of 2010 – Eminem & Rihanna’s Love The Way You Lie.

The remainder of the list (below) consists primarily of urban pop acts with Taio Cruz (twice), Bruno Mars and Usher all making an appearance.

Katy Perry – California Gurls 4.40 million
Train – Hey, Soul Sister 4.31 million
Eminem – Love The Way You Lie 4.25 million
Taio Cruz – Dynamite 4.08 million
B.o.B – Airplanes 4.00 million
Usher – OMG 3.76 million
Eminem – Not Afraid 3.41 million
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are 3.28 million
Taio Cruz – Break Your Heart 3.25 million
Lady Antebellum – Need You Now 3.18 million

Billboard noted that digital singles sales had increased by 1% in 2010, while album sales plummeted 12%.

In fact, only two albums sold more than 3 million copies – Eminem’s Recovery shifted 3.42 million copies, while country band Lady Antebellum sold 3.09 copies of Need You Now.

Pop acts found more success on the best selling albums countdown with Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha all represented.
