Gaga targets retail

Lady GaGa has made international headlines yesterday by signing an exclusive deal with Target to release a special edition of Born This Way – on the proviso that they stop funding companies or groups with an anti-LGBT agenda.

The diva’s stance is a direct response to the retailer donating $150,000 of corporate funds to political action committee NM Forward, which expressed support for Tom Emmer – a political candidate from Minnesota who is association with a christian organisation that advocates violence against members of the LGBT community.

“Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past,” Gaga told the media after meeting with Target executives.

While the fame monster’s agreement with the retail giant has been widely praised in the media, some commentators have pointed out that she wasn’t always so picky about her business partners.

The L.A. Times wrote an article about the product placement in Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance and Telephone music videos last December and concluded that she had either taken money from or featured products from companies with anti-LGBT ties such as Kraft Foods, Hewlett-Packard and Chevrolet.

Which raises the question – has the pop star seen the error of her ways or is this just a publicity stunt to promote her gay friendly Born This Way single?
