Hathaway goes gay for Glee

First she played Jake Gyllenhaal’s suspicious wife in Brokeback Mountain and thrilled us in The Devil Wears Prada. Now the Academy Award nominated actress Anne Hathaway will play a lesbian on the small screen.

Glee executive producer Brad Falchuck confirmed at Sunday’s Golden Globe awards that the actress would guest star as Kurt Hummel’s (Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer) lesbian aunt in an upcoming episode of the show.

“It was (Hathaway’s) idea, and (with) someone like her, it’s sort of hard to say no,” Mr Falchuck said.

“We don’t generally get excited about guest stars just for the sake of guest stars, but when you have someone like Gwyneth (Paltrow) or Anne Hathaway, where you can say ‘They are amazing,’ … they are big gifts to you.”

Glee is considered one of the most gay-friendly shows on television thanks to its willingness to tackle issues like gay bullying and coming out through to the raft of openly gay actors appearing on the show.

That, combined with reinterpreting music from gay icons like Madonna, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears and weaving it into major storylines, has earned the program a loyal gay following
