Jodie Foster publicly ‘comes out’

Actress Jodie Foster has used an acceptance speech at this year’s Golden Globe awards to announce that she was gay, something that has been somewhat common knowledge within Hollywood and the LGBTI community.

For the first time Foster publicly addressed her sexuality, saying that she had ‘come out’ to those close to her and her family years ago and that she never kept it a secret.

During a speech to accept the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award, Foster made the comments that delivered what many are saying were the surprise of the night.

The actor alluded at the start of her speech that she had an announcement to make and teased the audience by then saying “”that I’m a little bit nervous … I’m just gonna put it out there … I’m single.” The comment was met with laughter but Foster continued on to make her point.

“I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the stone age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends, and family, co-workers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her. To everyone she actually met.

“But now, apparently I’m told, that every celebrity is expected to honour the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a primetime reality show. You guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child.”

Whilst Foster finally quelled the rumours and set the record straight, she lamented that she felt pressure to reveal her sexuality.

“Privacy. Some day in the future people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was.”
