Lady Gaga’s chart record

Given the controversy surrounding Lady Gaga’s 99 cent deal with Amazon, fans and critics have been paying extra attention to the first week sales total of Born This Way in America.

The figures are finally in and the superstar’s third album sold 1.108 million copies, beating the opening week numbers of Taylor Swift’s mega-selling Speak Now – the last album to shift more than a million copies in seven days.

It is the largest first week for an album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre sold 1.141 million in 2005 and the second-best first week for a female artist in history (Only Britney’s Oops!…I Did It Again has done better).

As for the 99 cent deal, it ended up accounting for 440,000 copies of the total, meaning Born This Way still sold 668,000 copies at full price.

It leaves a question mark over the legitimacy of Gaga’s gigantic numbers but as Idolator points out, 668,000 copies is still more than the opening weeks of recent albums by Adele (352,000) and Britney (276,000) combined.
