Russia’s favourite fake lesbians officially broke up today after a decade of hits and controversy.

t.A.T.u. (an abbreviation of “Та любит Ту” – meaning “she loves her”) became an international phenomenon in the early noughties with their at the time scandalous image and sexually charged video clips.

They scored a massive worldwide number one hit with All The Things She Said, but their popularity declined when it turned out that the girls were heterosexual and the band was little more than a gimmick.

Nevertheless, the duo continued to score hits in Europe and even ran for the presidency of Russia!

Katina told Billboard magazine: “We’ve been doing our own thing for over two years now, and it was a logical conclusion.”

“People will remember us for great songs, being free, taking life as it is and not being afraid of anything.”

“[There were] provocative images of two girls kissing each other, but the second thing was the really great music,” she concluded.

Here’s their Australian chart topper All The Things She Said for old time’s sake.
