Pop music iconoclast Kate Bush premiered her first single in six years earlier this week.

Deeper Understanding is actually a revised version of a song the 52-year-old singer recorded over two decades ago – making it the perfect lead single for Director’s Cut, an album featuring “reimaginings” of tracks from her 1989 and 1993 classics The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.

Despite its vintage, Deeper Understanding – with its lyrics about finding solace through computers – still rings true today.

To update the song, Kate has added audio effects to lend it a more clinical sound and extended the running time by almost two minutes.

Fans are divided as to whether the new version is an improvement or not, but it’s unlike anything else you’ll hear in 2011.
