Coffee for a cause

There are good grounds to enjoy a cup of coffee on Friday August, 10 – namely CafeSmart, an initiative of grassroots charity StreetSmart, which raises funds for the homeless.

For the second year running CafeSmart is enlisting cafes around the country to help people who are homeless. Participating cafes will donate $1 from each coffee sold on the day to fund local projects.

In 2011, 175 cafes across Australia raised $47,477 to assist 38 local projects. This year cafes across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and regional areas will participate in the initiative – a full list is viewable on the StreetSmart website.

“Sometimes issues such as homelessness seem too big to tackle, but we believe we can all have a part in helping make a change and it starts with small actions,” StreetSmart CEO Adam Robinson said.

“It’s easy to participate in CafeSmart, and also encourage your family, friends and work colleagues to be part of the solution. The impact will be real and local.”

Since 2003, StreetSmart has raised and distributed $2.02 million to fund 491 projects relating to homelessness in local communities.
