Court clash in Perth

Gay marriage supporters in Perth will be hoping to replicate the massive turnout seen in Brisbane last month in their own counter-rally against anti-equality forces.

The Australian Family Association (AFA) rally against gay marriage at Margaret Court’s Victory Life Centre tonight will see Court, Rabbi Dr Shalom Coleman and the AFA’s Bill Muehlenberg speaking out against reforms to Australia’s Marriage Act.

Pro-gay marriage protesters will meet at Glendalough train station at 5.30pm this afternoon and march on the centre as opponents enter for the rally.

Organiser of the counter-rally Sam Cavallaro told The West that he expected the face-off to be non-violent and did not expect gay rights activists to be able to enter the centre.

“We want to stand up for our rights and against homophobia,” he said.

“We need to show [Margaret] Court and [Prime Minister Julia] Gillard that they are isolated in their views and put pressure on the Government to change the law.”

Court said she was disappointed there would be a counter-protest.

  1. Stuart, I designed the logo I use some years ago, long before the group Equal Love started. I used to work designing for DJ, Myers, Target, Kmart and more, and would guarantee Jim Wallace and Margaret Courts family would have photo albums showing them wearing clothes I have designed in my textile design days. I am sorry I do not have anything to do with Equal Love the group.

I am also sorry to hear of your current prosecution you talk about in other post. You are taking a brave stand.

  2. Dave, I notice you’re a member of Equal Love. Can you please tell me how it is that your group claims my Union, the CEPU, supports gay marriage? I can find no evidence that any of the officials or branches do. In fact, Edham Husic, the federal member for Blacktown and former National Secretary of the CEPU, is on the public record as saying he opposes gay marriage. I’ve tried to get answers from Equal Love, but to no avail.

  3. What the religious people who are against gay marriage need to realise is that they do not own marriage! you can get married without religion!Atheist get married all the time. They have no right to stop us getting married.

  4. Shame on Rabbi Dr Shalom Coleman for attending a rally with the likes of the AFA and religious fanatic, Margaret Court. As an orthodox Jew, he knows it goes against all the Laws that he is taught.

  5. Had people not dared to march in the 78 Mardi Gras, then I doubt we would have some of the freedoms we have today. But there they were marching in the streets for us. I only hope that we honour them, and continue along the Yellow Brick Road with the same determination and courage that those in 78 had.
