Derby back for second season

Derby back for second season

The Sydney Roller Derby League is returning for its second season, starting  Saturday, April  17. The gymnasium at Sydney Boys’ High will become a battlefield in 2010 as The D’viants take on their rivals, Screaming Assault Sirens, in an attempt to maintain their championship title.

“In our first season, we were still finding our footing, and some of us had never really played a full roller derby bout before,” SRDL spokeswoman Miss Biff told Sydney Star Observer.

“This year we have more girls on each team, and we’ve gained an incredible amount of experience, especially from playing other leagues. Hopefully, that’ll lead to a more competitive, more exciting season both for us and for our audience.”

To help launch its 2010 season, SRDL will host a fundraiser on Thursday, April 8, at the Gaelic Theatre. The Snowdroppers will perform at the event, described as a ‘night of rock ‘n’ roller debauchery’.

“We hope to raise a solid amount of cash to ensure we can send our Sydney City Assassins [state team] to play against as many other leagues as possible,” Miss Biff said.

“We don’t want to put an cap on our fundraising efforts as every bit helps and the more money we have, the more we can do as a league.“
