DIVA goes back to glam

DIVA goes back to glam

DIVA will return to Kings Cross this year. And the public will be given more opportunities to participate in the evening via a live SMS poll to pick the Belle of the Ball and an open nomination process for the Hall of Fame.
DIVA voting day will be held on October 24 and the ceremony at the Bourbon and Beefsteak is on October 26.
“Kings Cross, and in particular the Bourbon, has had a strong link with the drag community, and by holding the DIVA night at this fabulous venue, we come full circle, celebrating drag both past and present,” Avid co-chair Dejay Toborek said.
“Think of the night as a grand cocktail party in a sophisticated piano bar setting,” board member David Wilkins said.
“We will have live music and feature performances …  it will be like no other DIVA night you have ever experienced.”
Co-chair Greg Steele (pictured at Monday night’s launch party) went on to encourage “all showgirls, their dates and all of the supporters of drag to celebrate this night of nights, and come dressed to impress.”
In the meantime, drag fans and aficionados can get involved recording the history of Sydney’s drag scene, via Avid’s newly established DivaWiki site.

  1. Yes, the Bourbon and Beefsteak has strong Diva heritage links.

Bernie Houghton, its founder, has a statue in the nearby Fitzroy Gardens in his honour as a direct result of DIVAs lobbying the former South Sydney Council.

So why is Clover Moore’s new park design pulling down his statue?

Send Clover a messgae: our history is important to our future.
