French marriage vote impact

Australian gay marriage advocates have welcomed an overwhelming vote by the French Parliament in favour of marriage equality, saying it may result in the first same-sex marriages in Australia’s region of the world.

“The overwhelming vote allowing French same-sex couples to marry adds pressure on Australia to do the same, not least because it will mean French dependencies in our region, including New Caledonia and Tahiti, may achieve equality before we do,” Australian Marriage Equality national convenor Rodney Croome said.

The French National Assembly voted 249 to 97 to give in-principle support to same-sex couples marrying last week.
